With the Spaniard’s touted move back to his home country, we look at some of the Premier League’s other the big name and money transfers to La Liga.

There’ve certainly been some sensational deals over the years.

Luis Suarez (Liverpool > Barcelona)

Starting with one of the most recent, Suarez joined Barca in a mega deal from Anfield earning the Merseyside club over a reported £75m.

The move hasn’t exactly gone to plan for Suarez so far though in Catalonia but there’s no doubting Liverpool lost one of the World’s best and haven’t been able to replace him.

Thierry Henry (Arsenal > Barcelona)

Barcelona had wanted the Arsenal legend the season before he arrived at the Camp Nou following their defeat of the Gunners in the Champions League Final 2006.

Henry eventually travelled to Spain in 2007 but could never replicate the form of his best years at Arsenal. After a so-so couple of season found himself benched and on the way out.

Luka Modric (Tottenham Hotspur > Real Madrid)

Modric always excelled at Spurs and was linked with a number of big money moves before Madrid swooped in.

His first season was one to forget but is now such a vital cog in the Madrid side that the club were considering signing a new player just to cover the midfielder when injured due to the sheer magnitude of the job he does.

Xabi Alonso (Liverpool > Real Madrid)

Liverpool’s midfield driving force and stalwart in the middle, his exit from Anfield you suspect wasn’t as appreciated until the Reds lined up the season after his exit and were clearly a much less secure and robust side.

Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal > Barcelona)

Ah the saga everyone grew to despise.

Season after season Barcelona’s stars gave interview after interview talking about Fabregas’ DNA. How lovely.

Well, Fabregas finally got his move back home to Catalonia but was never fully accepted, found himself maligned, scapegoated and eventually shipped off to Chelsea where he has shown what a ridiculous move Barcelona made.

David Beckham (Manchester United > Real Madrid)

Real didn’t just sign the player but also the Beckham brand and his time in Madrid catapulted the Englishman to global stardom and celebrity.

However, he could never help replicate the kind of success he had achieved at United with his Real teammates and in his time at the Bernabeu won just one La Liga title and one Spanish Supercup.

Gareth Bale (Tottenham Hotspur > Real Madrid)

After a saga that lasted almost the entire length of the summer window of ‘will he, won’t he?’; Bale sealed a record breaking £86 million move to Real from Spurs following his immense rise in form over the previous few seasons.

Perhaps what bites most for the White Hart Lane supporters isn’t the loss of Bale but that his sale allowed arch-rivals Arsenal to capture German midfielder wizard Mesut Özil.

Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United > Real Madrid)

Ronaldo won’t be happy Bale has since trumped his incredible £80 mllion transfer fee, but the Portuguese has to be number one on this list just for his now worldwide stardom, immense ability, progress and success since joining Los Blancos.

At current, Ronaldo is probably the World’s best player following a stellar 2014 that saw him reap numerous accolades, records and rewards both personally and for his club that will most likely be pipped with the 2015 Balon d’Or.
