It is a clash between the master and the apprentice on Sunday as Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts take on Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos.

Colts owner Jim Irsay described it as his “hope and dream” to see the two quarterbacks go up against each other in the post-season, and it is certainly set to be an intriguing clash between two of the best in their position in the NFL.

Manning has faced the Colts twice since leaving, splitting them with a home win more recently back in September 7 after going for 655 yards with six touchdowns against his former team in those two appearances.

However, Sunday will be a completely different atmosphere and environment as it is now a lose and go home situation for both franchises.

Denver (12-4) had an extra week to prepare for Sunday’s clash after earning the No.2 seed in the Conference and the first-round bye that comes with it.

Given that they had 22 players listed on the injury report, the mini-break came at a perfect time for coach John Fox as he looks ahead to recovering a few key players.

Meanwhile, Luck has downplayed his head-to-head with Manning and insisted that while he obviously respects his opposite number, he is focusing on how he will bring about the downfall of the Broncos defensive unit.

“It’s not the quarterback versus quarterback thing. We’re not on the field at the same time,” Luck said. “I have a lot of respect for (Manning), what he does, what he still does is amazing. He’s a stud. I’ll worry about the Denver defense, that’s what I worry about.”

The Colts haven’t won in the divisional round since getting by Baltimore 20-3 in January 2010, with Manning leading the way. However, their win over the Cincinnati Bengals last weekend will give them confidence going forward but they will still need a near-perfect performance to conquer Sports Authority Field.
