GK) David De Gea, 6

The goalkeeper could do little on the goal, and generally didn’t have to do much in what was an uninspiring match until the final fifteen minutes.

CB) Phil Jones, 4

Was part of the back line that was woefully out of shape for the Saints’ goal, and had no chance to make up for it later on.

CB) Chris Smalling, 4

Similar to Jones in that he was part of the poor defending for Tadic’s strike, but had little else to do.

CB) Daley Blind, 5

Played an important part in passing the ball out from the back three, but the fact that United looked so drab has to go against the pass master.

LWB) Luke Shaw, 6

Tried his best going forward against his old team, but was unable to make any inroads despite the effort. Taken off for Tyler Blackett on 64′.

RWB) Antonio Valencia, 6

Same as Shaw, the pair’s failure showing how important the wing-backs are when you play with three/five at the back.

CDM) Michael Carrick, 5

The midfielder was unable to start any incisive attacks, and the slowness of any moves forward until the panic late on doesn’t look good on the man orchestrating things.

CM) Juan Mata, 3

Missed a multitude of chances, and looked off the pace in a physical encounter.

CM) Angel Di Maria, 4

Pushed too far forward and so was unable to run at players as he usually does, went off for Marouane Fellaini on 72′.

CAM) Wayne Rooney, 5

Seemed too deep to really affect things in the opposition’s box. If his future is in midfield then he needs to improve his passing.

ST) Robin van Persie, 4

Ineffectual in an attack where no one looked good, departed for Ander Herrera on 61′.

SUB) Ander Herrera, 5

Made no impact on the match, and seemed to find it hard to break down a resolute defence.

SUB) Tyler Blackett, 3

Struggled again as part of a back three, and doesn’t look to understand how to pay outside a four man back line. Was out of position for the goal.

SUB) Marouane Fellaini, 6

Came on as the Red Devils chased the match, but was not able to create or score the goal they needed.
