Van Gaal spent vast sums over the summer but his side are still fighting hard for a top four spot and as such it appears that Dutchman will be handed significant funds to once again boost his squad.

Clyne would certainly be a real improvement on options van Gaal has at right-back with the likes of Chris Smalling, Rafael and Luis Antonio Valencia all struggling to impress in the spot.

The Saints star has been in superb form over the past year, leading to a call-up to Roy Hodgson’s England national team set-up.

Van Gaal has set his sights on strengthening his midfield with a move for 25 year old French international Schneiderlin, though will no doubt have to fight off interest from a number of interested parties.

Though Marouane Fellaini has greatly improved this term it appears that van Gaal still wants to add more steel to his midfield, not least as summer signing Daley Blind has missed a chunk of the season through injury.

The fact that both players impressed in Southampton’s memorable win at Old Trafford last weekend will no doubt heighten van Gaal’s interest.
