Gerrard was taken off at half time as a precaution during the Reds 1-0 win over Sunderland after feeling a tight hamstring.

He has since had treatment at Liverpool’s training facilities in a bid to be fit for this weekend’s Premier League bout with Aston Villa but the Daily Mail say this could come too soon and the skipper will not feature.

The report also claims if Gerrard does not feature against Villa then serious questions would arise whether he would be ready to face the Blues when they visit Anfield next week.

No decision over Gerrard’s involvement in the League Cup will be made until later this week however and the legendary Liverpool midfielder will continue to fight for his fitness.

With his exit to LA Galaxy at the end of the season confirming the end to his time on Merseyside with the Reds, the Capital One Cup would perhaps be the best opportunity for Gerrard to have a trophy winning send off and Gerrard will hoping to feature in this key semi-final at Anfield.
