Top Ten Best Arsenal Signings Of The Arsene Wenger Era As Club Legend Hails Alexis Sanchez

Some of the world’s best talents have rocked up in North London during Wenger’s tenure.

Thierry Henry has hailed Alexis Sanchez as probably Arsene Wenger‘s greatest Arsenal signing of the past six years.

But how does the Gunners fiery Chilean figure in a list of some of Wenger’s best ever transfer coups?

We look at some of the best deals the Frenchman has managed to wrangle as Arsenal boss.

10) Aaron Ramsey

The Welshman’s breakout season in 2013/14 showed just what a midfield talent he will be both now and in the future.

His long term injury at the beginning of 2014 cannot have been more keenly felt and has been put down as the key reason Arsenal’s title charge faded.

Will no doubt become one of the best in his position in the next few years and the paltry amount Arsenal paid for him in his younger years will be seen as a genius move from Wenger.

9) Alexis Sanchez

A slightly controversial choice as the Chilean hasn’t really succeeded yet with the Gunners but if his opening six months in North London is anything to go by, he certainly will.

There was a slight sniffiness over the £35 million the Gunners were said to have paid for their star man but Sanchez looks absolutely priceless as he puts in Man of the Match displays week after week.

He is well on his way to going down the annuls of the North London side.

8) Robin Van Persie

A name you wouldn’t really want to mention around the Emirates now following his move to Manchester United in 2012. However during his time in North London van Persie was lauded as one of the very best, but it didn’t start out that way.

Signed with a reputation as a supremely talented but troubled striker, Wenger paid just £2.5 million for the Dutchman. But with some of that typical magic, the French coach nurtured van Persie to be one of the deadliest forwards in the world who eventually nabbed 132 goals in 277 games for the Gunners.

7) Kolo Toure

Toure arrived at Arsenal a nervous, jumpy kid from the Ivory Coast who actually ended up tackling Arsene Wenger in his Arsenal trial he was so eager to impress.

Toure was an unknown right back bought for pittance but has since developed into a Premier League mainstay and one of the country’s most accomplished defenders.

Whilst his powers may now be on the wain, Toure formed a formidable partnership with Sol Campbell and his passion, desire and humility are the perfect representation of Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal.

6) Marc Overmars

Overmars first season alone offers him near icon status with the Arsenal faithful after his winning goal at Old Trafford set the Gunners on their way to Arsene Wenger’s first double.

Although he never reached the heights of his premier Gunners campaign again, his blistering pace and cool finishing made him one of Arsenal’s most exciting and explosive players.

Despite not lasting a long time with the club before being sold to Barcelona, Overmars’ fee essentially allowed Arsenal to sign the likes of Pires, Wiltord and Lauren.

5) Sol Campbell

The defensive rock with which Arsenal built their Invincibles season, Campbell managed to win two Premier League titles and three FA Cups during his time with the Gunners.

Add to that the fact Arsene Wenger was able to pinch a key player from one of Arsenal’s biggest rivals, and one of the best in the world at that, for free.

4) Cesc Fabregas

The Barca fans might claim Arsenal stole the midfield wonder but Wenger snatched up a teenage Cesc Fabregas for a minuscule amount from the Catalan giants when they stalled on giving him a contract.

Fabregas would go on to develop into one of the most accomplished creative midfielders in the world and one of, if not the best, in his position.

Whilst Wenger may always feel sorrow for the fact he couldn’t keep the Spaniard or build a title winning side with him at the core, he can stay safe with the knowledge he helped develop one of the modern game’s great talents.

3) Robert Pires

The Frenchman just seemed to be the player who was always in the right place at the right time. A parried save, Pires would tuck away the rebound. A lapse in a defender’s concentration, Pires would make them pay.

But that’s not to say that’s all he did. Pires was bought for a relatively small figure but more than replaced the outgoing Overmars with style, skill, pace and verve.

That he managed to win the Football Writer’s Association Player of the Year award despite a season ending injury says all you need to know.

2) Patrick Vieira

One of the most accomplished midfielders this country has ever seen, Vieira was bought under Wenger’s suggestion before Le Professeur was confirmed as Arsenal boss a month later.

Vieira joined as a gangly, young, little known about star who had barely featured for AC Milan in his one season in Serie A. But the Frenchman was soon to become an Arsenal fan favourite with his powerful and confrontational style.

An accomplished attacker as well as a stable defensive presence, Vieira was the natural heir to Tony Adams as Arsenal captain and led his side to an incredible unbeaten season.

His final act as an Arsenal player was to score the winning penalty in the FA Cup final shootout with Manchester United.

1) Thierry Henry

Henry arrived at Arsenal as a inconsistent left winger who had had a failed spell at Juventus and it wasn’t long before Arsenal fans were questioning why their boss had splashed out on such a player and why he kept giving him so many chances.

228 goals later and Henry is a certified Arsenal legend in the eyes of fans and by common consent Arsenal’s greatest ever player.
