It wasn’t a particularly impressive display from either side but United did enough to get the three points, with substitutes James Wilson and Marouane Fellaini ensuring the Red Devils left Loftus Road with the three points.

Here are our player ratings for the match:

GK: David De Gea – 7

A typically robust display from the Spaniard who kept out a couple of fierce shots from Charlie Austin and snuffed out every QPR attack when Redknapp’s side searched for an equaliser.

RCB: Phil Jones – 6

Strangely took the corners for United today. Was generally okay and kept QPR’s attackers at bay.

CB: Jonny Evans – 5

Sacrificed for James Wilson and a tactical switch in the second half and United didn’t real miss him. Looked off the pace at times but improved as the game went on.

LCB: Marcos Rojo – 4

The Argentinian looked shaky and could have cost his side the win after he and Carrick went for the same ball and allowed QPR to break but luckily the West Londoners couldn’t take advantage.

CM: Michael Carrick – 5

Kept the tempo up in the middle of the park but as mentioned was almost undone by Rojo attempting to clear the same ball. Didn’t produce anything going forward.

RWB: Antonio Valencia – 6

Had a few attempted crosses and almost got behind the QPR back line a few times but never used his pace effectively. Was penalised by the referee for a foul throw but did manage to pick out Fellaini for United’s opener.

RM: Juan Mata – 5

The first to be sacrificed at half-time, Mata was essentially anonymous in the first half apart from creating a potential goalscoring chance for Falcao.

LM: Wayne Rooney – 6

Like so many of United’s performances today, Rooney looked relatively apathetic during the 90 minutes and produced hardly anything of note, though the captain was composed and tidy on the ball.

LWB: Daley Blind – 6

Saw plenty of the ball from the left wing but would surely provide more if he was played in his preferred central position.

CF: Angel Di Maria – 5

Not the Argentine’s best day at the office at all and looked lost in the first half in his more advanced role. However as the game went on and he dropped back he added a bit more sparkle to his performance.

CF: Radamel Falcao – 5

Should have scored at least one goal after Wilson set up two glorious chances. He was better than we’ve seen in recent weeks but his potency in front of goal is surely an increasing concern.

Coach: Louis van Gaal

Fair play to van Gaal who saw how dour the first half was and was open to changing his system. His tactical switch at the break and his two substitutions was the key reason United were able to fight their way to a victory.

Substitutions:

Marouane Fellaini – 8

Added much needed verve and steel to a listless United performance when he came on at the break and definitely improved his side, putting himself about and scoring the opener that set them on their way.

James Wilson – 7

The youngster came on for Evans as van Gaal sought a victory.

His pace and trickery should have seen him finish the match with two assists if Falcao had been more clinical but will be happy to get the goal that sealed the three points at the end.
