Southampton will be looking to cement their place in the Premier League’s top four when they take on Newcastle United on Saturday, while the hosts will be looking for their first win under caretaker boss John Carver.

The Saints are aiming for a third successive win in all competitions, after back-to-back 1-0 wins over Manchester United in the league, and against Ipswich Town in the FA Cup.

Following on from their win at Old Trafford, Ronald Koeman’s side sit third in the Premier League, three points clear of fifth place Arsenal, as they look to secure a shock spot in the Champions League for next season.

They could have to cope without midfield general Victor Wanyama, who went off injured during the win at Portman Road on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Magpies have fallen to tenth in the table, after just one win in their last six games. They are a healthy eight points clear of the relegation zone as things stand, but are still an ominous 13 adrift of the 40-point ‘safety mark’.
