Football in the 90s – Why the 1990s was football’s real golden age

Arsenal – Alexis Sanchez

It’s amazing to think that Barcelona actually let him go. The little Chilean belongs in a team that would be challenging for titles every season, but it’s good to see that he has handled the responsibility of being the focal point of a team with consummate ease.

Aston Villa – Jores Okore

The young Danish centre-back has only just made his return from a year out with a ligament injury, and his emergence has coincided with a tightening in Villa’s back line. Quick, powerful, intelligent, his work rate and ability to pick out a pass sets him apart from most other defenders.

Burnley – Danny Ings

An out and out goalscorer with room to mature. Ings will regularly be in double figures if (when) he eventually moves on from Turf Moor.

Chelsea – Cesc Fabregas

Ever seen the movie Space Jam? If that happened on football terms rather than basketball, Fabregas would almost definitely be in that team defending the earth.

Crystal Palace – Mile Jedinak

Jedinak may not be world class, but he is a key lynchpin in Palace’s midfield and is probably being wasted there. Would fit in perfectly at somewhere like Everton.

Everton – Ross Barkley

Everton had a prodigiously talented kid on their books once before, and we all know what happened there…

Hull City – Tom Huddlestone

Many were shocked when Hudds’ left Tottenham for Hull, and judging by his displays on the river Humber a move to a bigger club should see him returned to England team where many believe he belongs.

Leicester City – Esteban Cambiasso

A lot of credit needs to go the veteran Argentine. At his age he could have quite easily taken a huge payday to see out his career in a lesser league. Instead he went and found one of the biggest challenges he could and his class shines through on a regular basis.

Liverpool – Raheem Sterling

Liverpool have proved to be desperately average without Luis Suarez leading the line, and Sterling deserves to go somewhere that will give him a chance to actually win trophies.

Manchester City – Sergio Aguero

Aguero belongs at Real Madrid or Barcelona, or even Bayern Munich. City are undeniably a big club, but they lack a certain ingredient that stops them being considered as a great club. And great players need to be at great clubs.

Manchester United – Angel Di Maria

Like Sanchez at Arsenal, the mind boggles that Real Madrid allowed Di Maria to leave the club. He has been an instant his at Old Trafford, and will be sure to play an integral part in any success United may have in the near future.

Newcastle United – Moussa Sissoko

Sissoko is an absolute boss in the middle of the Newcastle midfield and came as a steal at just £3m. He keeps the side ticking over in a way that Yohan Cabaye did before him.

QPR – Charlie Austin

Austin has been on the radar for years working his way up the ladder and is now getting the recognition he deserves in the Premier League. It says a lot that for all the expensive signings the club have made recently, the one trumping them all is a young lad from Hungerford.

Southampton – Dusan Tadic

Adam who? Adam La…no, forget it. That’s what Saints fans did when they first signed Serb last summer. He represents everything the Saints are doing right at the moment, though it was a tough choice to separate him from a number of the club’s other stars they brought in once their former stars were sold.

Stoke City – Marko Arnautovic

Bojan hasn’t established himself enough yet to earn his moniker, but Arnautovic is Stoke’s wild card. He won’t be at the club long should they fail to break away from the rest of the mid-table pack.

Sunderland – Jermain Defoe

Defoe is only on this list because of the career he’s had. It was tough to pick a Sunderland player as they are all so distinctly average, but the Black Cats will be hoping to get some bang for their buck from the former England man considering what they’re paying him.

Swansea City – Gylfi Sigurdsson

The Icelandic star would not be out of place at a truly big club and the Swans can count themselves lucky that they managed to bring him back last summer. Capable of winning games on his own or pulling something special out the bag for someone else to finish off.

Tottenham – Christian Eriksen

By now, even Spurs fans must be getting bored of seeing Eriksen pull them out of a jam in the last minute. Sadly, though, he’s a shade too good for Spurs at the moment, and it would be no surprise to see him move on somewhere else in the summer.

West Bromwich Albion – Saido Berahino

Unluckily for West Brom, he’s in line to be harvested by a much bigger club before the end of the month. Bursting on to the scene last season, his goals have kept Albion’s head above water and has become the best thing to come out of West Bromwich since…Frank Skinner?

West Ham – Diafra Sakho

Sakho has been a revelation for the Hammers this season, and it already looks at though he won;t be there long if he carries on his dominant displays the way he has.
