The Gunners started the 2014/15 season with only six first team defenders – with youngster Hector Bellerin having since been promoted from the Under-21s – and injuries have really shown up their lack of depth.

“If we have another injury or two we will struggle. It is risky (not to sign anyone) – too risky,” Wenger was quoted by Sky Sports.

So here CaughtOffside takes a look at the defenders the North Londoners could sign in the January transfer window.

Mats Hummels

We may as well start with the pick of the bunch, with Hummels casting his future at Borussia Dortmund into doubt in recent times and with the Yellow and Blacks struggling in the Bundesliga currently there could be no better time to sign the 2014 World Cup winner.

Tyrone Mings

A little more low key a signing, although Mings has been greatly impressing with Ipswich Town in the Championship this term and though currently operating as a left-back, the future of this 21-year-old is considered to be in central defence.

Martin Montoya

A right-back who cuts a frustrated figure with boyhood club FC Barcelona at the moment with both Dani Alves and Douglas ahead of him for a place in the starting XI, although with the Catalans currently in a transfer embargo they will perhaps be reluctant to sell anyone.

Hector Moreno

Another centre-back and a player who is also being monitored by rivals Tottenham Hotspur as manager Mauricio Pochettino has a good relationship with Moreno’s club Espanyol having previously managed them.

Loic Perrin

A slightly more experienced option with Perrin approaching his 30th birthday, but the performances for Saint-Etienne over the past two seasons mean this veteran could well be worth the gamble.

Winston Reid

Has been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium for some time and is out of contract this summer, with West Ham United boss Sam Allardyce admitting the New Zealand international is likely to leave the Boleyn Ground.

Virgil van Dijk

To the Scottish Premier League now and this central defender has been doing well for Celtic in recent times, but whether van Dijk can make the transition to English football is unknown – although the 23-year-old is keen on the move.
