Ten Premier League Stars Who Have Come Back from the Dead This Season, Including Liverpool Duo & Forgotten Arsenal Midfielder

Fabio Borini scored his first Liverpool goal in over a year during the win over Aston Villa…

Fabio Borini’s Liverpool career was meant to be over. After just two goals in his first 33 games for the club, a red card against Arsenal having only come on as a second-half sub, and attempted sales to QPR and Sunderland, no one thought the Italian would be back at Anfield.

But not only is he back in Brendan Rodgers’ plans, having started the last two matches, he’s also back among the goals – after his crucial strike against Aston Villa leading to a 2-0 victory, and saw the Reds continue to climb the table.

Of course, he’s not the only Premier League player to come back from the dead. Here are ten other current stars whose careers looked to be in jeopardy before a remarkable turn around:

10) Ashley Young (Manchester United)

Something of a forgotten man under David Moyes, but brought back into the fold by Louis van Gaal. Utilised as a left wing back, as well as left midfielder, a role he has taken to surprisingly well.

9) Kolo Toure (Liverpool)

Struggled to get in the squad last season, let alone the team. But has been arguably the Reds best defender so far this season, and will likely be missed while with the Ivory Coast at the Africa Cup of Nations.

8) Nacho Monreal (Arsenal)

Was nothing more than a bit-part player at the start of the season, but a defensive injury crisis pushed him into service as a makeshift centre back, and he fared surprisingly well.

7) Florin Gardos (Southampton)

Perhaps the only summer signing that hadn’t – until recently – been dubbed a success on the South Coast. But a couple of injuries have seen him become a regular alongside Jose Fonte, and he’s done well.

6) Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur)

Looked unlikely to hit it big at White Hart Lane after a series of indifferent loan spells at lower league clubs, but has shot to prominence this season, scoring 17 goals in all competitions – a fantastic effort.

5) Martin Demichelis (Manchester City)

Was openly mocked when he arrived at City for a series of poor mistakes, but has improved drastically after his shaky start, and is now a reliable back-up option with plenty of experience for the champions.

4) Steven Naismith (Everton)

Made a slow start to life at Everton after joining from Rangers in 2012, but has steadily won over supporters with a series of consistent performances. Will never be a prolific goalscorer, but brings plenty to the team.

3) Francis Coquelin (Arsenal)

Started the season with Charlton, but now playing regularly at the Emirates Stadium, coming in to help solve another injury crisis – this time in the defensive midfield area. Had done very well.

2) Fabio Borini (Liverpool)

As mentioned earlier, the Italian’s career at Anfield looked dead and buried. But credit to him, he wouldn’t give up and vowed to fight for his place, and perhaps now his is reaping his reward.

1) Marouane Fellaini (Manchester United)

Struggled desperately after being David Moyes’ solitary big money signing last summer, but has improved steadily under the stewardship of Louis van Gaal, and chipped in with another crucial goal against QPR on Saturday.
