Liverpool Boss Brendan Rodgers Tells Players That They Need To Win A Trophy

Rodgers is yet to get his hands on any silverware during his time in charge.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has issued a rallying cry to his in-form Liverpool side, requesting they deliver at least one trophy this season, report the Mirror. The Reds have yet to put any silverware in the cabinet since Rodgers moved to the club as manager from Premier League rivals Swansea City two and a half years ago, but did come extremely close to a famous Premier League title last term before Manchester City usurped them at the death.

Rodgers and his side appear to have recovered from their poor start to the season in recent weeks, with the weekend victory over Aston Villa extending an excellent run that has seen them rise from mid-table also-rans into a side who must be taken seriously once again in the battle for the Champions League places.

This week’s League Cup semi final first leg against league leaders Chelsea represents a different challenge, however, and winning a tough two-legged affair against the Blues could be their best chance to meet Rodgers’ demands and lift a cup this season.

Should they get past Chelsea, Liverpool would be likely to enter a final against either Tottenham Hotspur or Sheffield United as favourites, which could then result in the trophy that Rodgers’ comments indicate that he now craves after a lengthy period in the Anfield hotseat:

“We have worked really hard in the majority of the two-and-a-half years here, but we are here to win and we are a club that is synonymous with winning trophies,” Rodgers explained to the Mirror.

“We want to get that back again and hopefully we can do that this season. Winning a trophy is part of what we are trying to build here and trying to deliver – our aim this season has to be to win a trophy and qualify for the Champions League.”
