The 20-year-old forward has been the Reds stand-out player throughout much of the current campaign, while he also looked refreshed tonight – playing just his second game after returning from an extended winter break.

Below, we compare Sterling’s progress with two other of England’s emerging talents – West Brom’s Saido Berahino and Tottenham’s Harry Kane. Which will enjoy the most success in their future careers?

3) Saido Berahino (West Bromwich Albion)

No-nonsense Tony Pulis could be the perfect manager to oversee the next stage of Berahino’s development. After an outstanding start to the season, which quickly saw him become the Premier League’s leading English goalscorer, the 21-year-old’s progress slowed, while his goals dried up for the last couple of months of 2014. Apparent interest from Liverpool and Tottenham, as well as question marks over his attitude could hardly have been easy to deal with for a player who few had ever heard of this time last year. Berahino now looks set to stay put, according to the Daily Mail, while the goals have begun to flow again. He’s already experienced the England squad late last year and will now be aiming for a first cap.

2) Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur)

There is little doubting the fact that Kane has thrived under the stewardship of Mauricio Pochettino. He looks fitter, stronger – and as a result the goals have begun to fly in. The Spurs boss has transformed the 21-year-old from a bench-warmer and a perennial loan player (who was send out on four occasions), into one of the most deadly strikers in the Premier League – epitomized by his recent all-action display in the 5-3 win over Chelsea. Kane has netted 17 times in all competitions this campaign and while his place in the team has partly been down to the struggles of Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado, it’s hard to take anything away from him. An England call doesn’t seem too far away.

1) Raheem Sterling (Liverpool)

The once in a generation talent that is Raheem Sterling has long since been in the public limelight. Since making his Reds debut in 2012, Sterling’s rise has been both incredible and rapid. Within two years he had become a key player for both club and country, while he was at the forefront of both England’s World Cup campaign in Brazil and Liverpool’s run to second place in the Premier League – alongside Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge. This season, without the ‘SAS’ there to support him, his game has taken on an extra dimension. He has proved himself capable of playing in a central striker role, as well as the top of a diamond midfield and out wide, while he has, at times, dragged an ailing Liverpool side back into top four contention.
