Manchester United v Arsenal – October 2004

The infamous ‘Battle of the buffet’

Manchester United ended Arsenal’s 49 game unbeaten run in the Premier League with Ruud van Nistelrooy and Wayne Rooney grabbing the goals to seal the victory, and the Gunners were not happy with what they perceived as rough treatment from Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.

The Red Devils manager was reportedly hit in the face with a slice of pizza thrown from the Arsenal dressing room. Midfielder Cesc Fabregas was alleged to be the player responsible for the pizza-throwing, but has never admitted to it.

The match will forever be remembered as the ‘Battle of the Buffet’, or ‘Pizzagate’.

Beckham gets mocked for his penalty miss

David Beckham and Turkish defender Alpay dramatically clashed on the pitch when the defender mocked the England midfielder for his penalty miss in the Euro 2004 qualifier, and the players subsequently became embroiled in an explosive bust-up in the tunnel.

The confrontation took place during half-time and both players were called into Italian referee Pierluigi Collina’s room in the hope of claiming them down.

UEFA charged both the England and Turkey FA for the bust-up.

Valencia v Inter Milan

An astonishing brawl during the Champions League clash

Valencia’s David Navarro was banned by UEFA for a staggering seven months for his role in the brawl that transpired on the pitch, which entirely stole the headlines from the Champions League fixture.

Navarro was responsible for kick-starting the fight when, as a substitute, he ran on-field and punched Inter Milan’s Nicolas Burdisso, which resulted in a mass-involvement from both sides.

The disruption continued in the tunnel and dressing-rooms with the Inter players attempting to confront Valencia’s Navarro.

The Sky pundit involved in furious row with the Reading striker

In a bizarre turn of events Sky Sports pundit Ruud Gullit became embroiled in a seething row with Reading’s Dave Kitson after the striker was sent-off for a studs-first challenge on Manchester United left-back Patrice Evra.

Gullit tracked down the attacker in the tunnel becoming involved in a heated argument in which the Netherlands star told Kitson he should have received a ‘double red card’ and a six-match ban.

Patrick Vieira v Roy Keane

Clash of the captains

Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira’s infamous bust-up occurred in the tunnel ahead of the clash between Manchester United and Arsenal in 2005.

The Red Devils won 4-2 with Keane dominating his rival and Premier League enemy Vieira in midfield.
