The England international, who has been plagued with injury problems for much of the last year or so, impressed for the Saints prior to his lengthy spell on the sidelines, and has been linked with top clubs on a number of occasions.

Tottenham Hotspur, who are managed by former Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino, have also been mentioned as possible suitors for Rodriguez.

Still, City are keen to bring in a replacement for the under-performing Stevan Jovetic, who has been a disappointment since he made the move to the Etihad Stadium from Fiorentina last season.

It may now be that the signing of Wilfried Bony and the pursuit of Rodriguez could push Jovetic out of the door, with the Montenegro international seemingly not in Manuel Pellegrini’s first-team plans at the moment.
