Here are United’s top five humbling FA Cup moments against lower-league opposition:

5) Cambridge United 0-0 Manchester United (2015)

Despite the 76 league places between them, there was nothing to choose between Cambridge and a strong Man United team, which included summer signings Falcao, Di Maria, Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind. Cambridge keeper Chris Dunn made several superb saves, but the U’s may look back blissfully on what could have been, had Josh Coulson found the net with a close range header.

4) Manchester United 1-0 Crawley Town (2011)

Wes Brown’s 28th minute header was the only thing to separate United from Crawley Town, then a non-league side, at Old Trafford. David Hunt and Matt Tubbs both spurned late chances to draw the Blues Square Bet Premier side level late on, while Richard Brodie hit the crossbar with a looping header that looked to have beaten goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard.

3) Burton Albion 0-0 Manchester United (2006)

A youthful United team were held by Conference side Burton Albion, with Sir Alex Ferguson’s side winning the replay 5-0. Burton enjoyed their moment on their own ground however, surviving a late onslaught that saw Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo both come on from the substitute bench. Burton keeper Saul Deeney was the hero with several impressive saves.

2) Manchester United 0-0 Exeter City (2005)

Andy Taylor missed two chances to hand Exeter a shock victory at Old Trafford. The former United trainee squandered both his opportunities and the Premier League side eventually progressed via a replay. City boss Alex Inglethorpe said at the time: “I am incredibly proud of the team, not just for the way we played but the way we have conducted ourselves throughout the build-up.”

1) Bournemouth 2-0 Manchester United (1984)

Harry Redknapp’s third division side beat FA Cup holders United 2-0 at Dean Court, with Red Devils boss Ron Atkinson facing an embarrassing backlash following the result. In his first managerial job, Redknapp said: “We don’t get many days like this in Bournemouth.”

Fast forward to 2015 and the South Coast club are preparing to face Aston Villa in the same competitions, while they also push for promotion from the Premier League.
