The England international has been strongly linked to Liverpool by the Daily Star, and this will be a major blow to the Reds’ hopes of signing him.

With only six months left on his contract, the Citizens will have to tie the 29-year-old down to a new deal soon if they want to keep hold of him.

The former Aston Villa man has let his contract run down so low because of a lack of first team opportunities at the Etihad Stadium, but this season he has already featured 25 times.

Injuries and the Africa Cup of Nations are the main reasons behind this though and he may not have the same chances in the next campaign.

A role in central midfield is what Milner wants, and with Steven Gerrard leaving in the summer he could well slot right in to the starting XI at the Merseyside club.
