Six Worst Ever Debuts In Football History Including Two Ex-Arsenal Players And Real Madrid Disaster

Following Dundee goalkeeper’s departure after one game we look at the worst ever debuts…

German goalkeeper Arvid Schenk left Dundee on Wednesday after only playing one game and conceding six goals against city rivals Dundee United.

Schenk was brought in as cover for first choice ‘keeper Kyle Letheran, but after playing in the 6-2 loss in the New Year’s Day derby he has made a swift exit.

Here are the six worst football debuts of all time:

6) Arvid Schenk (DUNDEE v Dundee United)

The 25-year-old had a torrid time in his first and only game for Dundee, conceding six against arch-rivals Dundee United.

5) Jonathan Woodgate (REAL MADRID v Athletic Bilbao)

Real Madrid’s £13.4m signing of injury-prone defender Jonathan Woodgate raised more than a few eyebrows and he managed to set an incredibly high standard for terrible debut games. After waiting an entire year to play after signing, Woodgate scored a spectacular diving header own goal and was then sent off after 66 minutes for a second yellow.

4) Ali Dia (SOUTHAMPTON v Leeds United)

Ali Dia somehow managed to game time with Premier League Southampton despite not having had any previous football experience. Manager Graeme Souness was told he was a cousin of George Weah and decided to throw him straight into a game against Leeds, coming on as a sub for Matt Le Tissier. Unfortunately for Dia, he was substituted again after only 21 minutes on the pitch.

3) Jason Crowe (ARSENAL v Birmingham)

Journeyman right-back Jason Crowe struggled to get into the Arsenal side as he was understudy to Lee Dixon. When he eventually did get his chance, coming off the bench in the League Cup against Birmingham, he was shown a red card after exactly 33 seconds on the pitch for a high tackle.

2) Emmanuel Frimpong (BARNSLEY v Sheffield Wednesday)

After being pictured looking incredibly miserable and sending a disparaging tweet about signing for Barnsley, Frimpong was sent off 30 minutes into his debut against South Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday.

1) Stanley Milton (HALIFAX TOWN v Stockport County)

Although this debut happened 80 years ago, it would be a hard task for anyone to find a more disastrous first game. Goalkeeper Stanley Milton conceded two goals while playing for Halifax Town against Stockport before going on to concede another 11 goals in the second half for a 13-0 loss. If Arvid Schenk is reading this, hopefully it made him feel a bit better!
