Here are the individual battles that could shape the encounter…

5) Eden Hazard vs Pablo Zabaleta

With both Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa ruled out of the big match, it could come down to Hazard to be the Stamford Bridge outfit’s main creator against the Citizens. It will be up to Zabaleta to stop the Belgian, and, as one of the best right-backs in the world, he may well be able to.

4) Sergio Aguero vs John Terry

Aguero hasn’t looked back to his best since returning from injury, but will need to be at his best against former England international Terry. The Citizens tend to struggle when their talismanic striker isn’t on form and they can’t afford that at Stamford Bridge.

3) David Silva v Nemanja Matic

It will be down to Matic to stop midfield creator Silva. If the Spaniard is allowed to control the game then the Sky Blues are likely to come away with all of the points.

2) Vincent Kompany v Loic Remy/Didier Drogba

With Costa ruled out of the game through suspension, Didier Drogba or Loic Remy will have to lead the line. Similarly to Aguero, Kompany has found it hard to return to form after an injury-related absence, but he will need to improve quickly against whichever striker he faces.

1) Oscar v Fernando

Oscar will have extra pressure on his shoulders because of the injury to Fabregas, and Fernando is the City player likely to be up against him. The two Brazilians’ battle in the middle of the park could decide who has midfield control in the match.
