However, does history tell us that such a move would be best avoided from Brendan Rodgers and co? Below, we rank the British and Irish players signed by Liverpool over the last decade. Click through the pages and you should have your answer:

18) Paul Konchesky (Fulham)

A signing that summed up Roy Hodgson’s disastrous spell in charge, he was shipped out on loan and sold the next summer.

17) Joe Cole (Chelsea)

After being sent off on his debut, things never really improved for the former Chelsea man. He spent a year on loan at Lille, before eventually leaving for West Ham.

16) Robbie Keane (Tottenham Hotspur)

Never got going at Liverpool, struggling for goals throughout his brief spell at the club. Sold back to Tottenham the following January.

15) Andy Carroll (Newcastle United)

Another striker who failed to make the grade at Liverpool, despite a massive transfer fee. The expectation was too high and the injuries added up.

14) Jonjo Shelvey (Charlton Athletic)

Shelvey enjoyed plenty of promising moments at Anfield and some were surprised when he was allowed to leave on the cheap to Swansea. Despite moments of brilliance however, he arguably wasn’t Liverpool quality.

13) Jordon Ibe (Wycombe Wanderers)

An extremely promising youngster. The only reason he’s not higher in this list is due to the lack of opportunities he’s had so far.

12) Jermaine Pennant (Birmingham City)

Enjoyed a decent spell at Liverpool, but was never likely to become a regular first-team player. He was eventually shipped out a couple of years later.

11) Charlie Adam (Blackpool)

Had a couple of bright moments, but was never likely to suit Brendan Rodgers’ desired style of football. He was quickly moved, and is currently struggling for game time at Stoke.

10) Rickie Lambert (Southampton)

The boyhood Liverpool fan completed a lifelong dream when he arrived at the club this summer. The goals haven’t flowed for him, but he remains a decent back-up option and offers something different.

9) Robbie Fowler (Manchester City)

Brought back to the club by Rafael Benitez, and chipped in with a handful of goals. He also got to bid a fond farewell to the Liverpool supporters.

8) Adam Lallana (Southampton)

The England international has struggled to live up to his huge price tag so far this season, but has showed enough quality to suggest that he’ll prove a worthwhile investment.

7) Stewart Downing (Aston Villa)

The massive price tag and the high expectations never really sat comfortably with him, and despite a few moments of quality he was eventually moved on by Rodgers.

6) Joe Allen (Swansea City)

Has been a steady presence in the Liverpool side since his arrival from Swansea, but even now we’re perhaps still waiting for his career at the club to truly take off.

5) Craig Bellamy (Blackburn Rovers and Manchester City)

Signed on two separate occasions and twice did a decent job for the club, with the fan favourite chipping in with numerous goals during both spells.

4) Peter Crouch (Southampton)

Despite his slow start, the big man enjoyed a very decent spell with Liverpool. He found the net 22 time in 85 league games, while also doing well for England.

3) Glen Johnson (Portsmouth)

Not always the most popular man around Anfield, but the attacking full-back has been a loyal servant to Liverpool and has certainly proved value for money over the years.

2) Jordan Henderson (Sunderland)

Another slow starter, but under Brendan Rodgers he has developed into an excellent player with realistic ambitions of taking over the captaincy at the end of the season.

1) Daniel Sturridge (Chelsea)

One of the best signings made by the club in the modern era. His goal record is excellent and his spell at the club has only slightly been let down by his niggling injury concerns.
