Top Ten Shock Results In Europe This Season – Including Bayern Munich, Chelsea & Man United Thrashings

Bayern Munich suffered their first defeat of the season last night…

Bayern Munich were left humiliated last night as they were thrashed 4-1 by Wolfsburg. For Pep Guardiola’s side, it was a first meaningful league defeat in over two years, with their only previous losses coming when the Bundesliga title was already secured.

After only conceding four goals in their first 17 league fixtures, that tally was doubled inside 90 minutes as their inspired hosts claimed victory through a pair of braces from Bas Dost and former Chelsea man Kevin De Bruyne.

Unsurprisingly, the result lists highly on our list of the ten biggest shocks from across Europe so far this season. Click through the list below to see our other nine candidates:

10) Liverpool 0-1 Aston Villa

Gabriel Agbonlahor scored the only goal of the game as Liverpool’s run of poor results got off to a dire start at Anfield. Mario Balotelli was quiet on his home debut while the Reds struggled to create chances throughout the game. The result took Villa to second place in the table.

9) Stoke City 3-2 Arsenal

Peter Crouch scored within a minute, while goals from Bojan and Jon Walters has the Potters in an unbelievable 3-0 lead by half-time. Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey hauled the Gunners back into contention, but it wasn’t enough to get anything from the game.

8) Manchester City 0-1 Stoke City

Stoke were at it again here, beating the Premier League champions at the Etihad Stadium. Mame Biram Diouf scored the only goal of the game, racing 70 yards to beat Joe Hart, while City failed to score at home for the first time in 71 matches.

7) Genoa 1-0 Juventus

Luca Antonini scored in the fourth minute of stoppage time to inflict Juventus’ first and still only defeat of the season. The Genoa players celebrated as if they’d won the league after the full-time whistle, while it was disappointment for Gianluigi Buffon on his 500th game for Juve.

6) Tottenham Hotspur 5-3 Chelsea

Chelsea were torn apart at White Hart Lane as goals from Harry Kane (2), Danny Rose, Andros Townsend and Nacer Chadli secured a famous win for Tottenham in this London derby. Diego Costa, Eden Hazard and John Terry found the net for the Blues.

5) Barcelona 0-1 Celta Vigo

Joaquin Larrivey scored the only goal at the Camp Nou as Celta Vigo secured a quite incredible victory. It was the first time Barcelona, whose side included Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez, had failed to find the net in a home game since October 2011.

4) Real Sociedad 4-2 Real Madrid

Sociedad came from two goals down to beat European Champions Real Madrid, who had led through Sergio Ramos and Gareth Bale. Inigo Martinez and David Zurutuza brought the scores level, before former Arsenal man Carlos Vela and a second from Zurutuza sealed a famous win.

3) Newcastle United 2-1 Chelsea

The Premier League title favourites came into the game unbeaten in all competitions, but they were stunned by a fine defensive performance from the Magpies. Both Newcastle goals came through Papiss Cisse, and while Didier Drogba pulled one back it proved to be merely a consolation.

2) Leicester City 5-3 Manchester United

Despite leading 3-1 through goals from Robin van Persie, Angel di Maria and Ander Herrera, Louis van Gaal’s side collapsed to fall to an astonishing defeat against their newly promoted Premier League rivals. Leonardo Ulloa scored twice, while David Nugent, Esteban Cambiasso and Jamie Vardy secured the shock result.

1) Wolfsburg 4-1 Bayern Munich

The defending German champions remain eight points clear at the top of the table and remain the clear favourites to retain their title, but were handed something of a reality check after returning from their winter break. This result will live long in the memory for all concerned.
