Goalkeeper and defence:

With the signings of Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels and Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne also likely, United could field a very different back five next season, with Strootman’s arrival perhaps also pushing Daley Blind back to the left-back position, where Luke Shaw has struggled to impress this term.

Midfield:

In a midfield three, Strootman should take the deepest role, replacing the likes of Michael Carrick and £30m summer signing Ander Herrera, as well as all but ending Marouane Fellaini’s future at Old Trafford.

Attack:

With Edinson Cavani unsettled at Paris Saint-Germain and linked as a possible replacement for the goal-shy Radamel Falcao, Wayne Rooney could also move upfront next season after struggling in midfield, a gap Strootman would fill in instead.
