Per Mertesacker: Crisis Talks Saved Arsenal’s Season

The North London club signed both Gabriel Paulista from Villarreal and Krystian Bielik from Legia Warsaw in the January transfer window, but the former midfielder thinks that these two are not enough to challenge the top two Premier League sides.

Parlour believes that now is the time to invest following last season’s FA Cup victory.

“The squad they have now is very good, but the signings are important. The age of the squad is very good,” the Englishman was quoted by the Daily Mail

“This summer is going to be so important. They will get back to winning stuff.

“They could overturn Manchester City and Chelsea if they bring in the right players. It is time to kick on from last year’s FA Cup win.”

The 41-year-old also thinks that the emergence of Francis Coquelin means that this money may not need to be spent on a defensive midfielder.

Just two months ago the Frenchman was on loan at Charlton Athletic, but he has now returned to the Emirates Stadium and taken a prominent role in the team.

“It is great to see Coquelin play well. A lot of the plaudits go to attacking players, but he’s taken his chance very well,” Parlour added.

“Wenger is loyal so, if you play well, he will keep on playing you. He’s become an important player for Arsenal.”
