Kane signed a five-and-a-half-year contract with the club on Monday after lighting up White Hart Lane this season with 20 goals in all competitions, and Sherwood believes the forward has him to thank.

The 21-year-old striker has been thrown into first-team action this season, and has been in sublime form. Most memorably the forward put in a masterclass showing against current Premier League leaders Chelsea, in Tottenham’s 5-3 thrashing of their London rivals, netting two goals and winning a penalty.

“Truth be known, if Tottenham had had their way … then Harry Kane would not have been Harry Kane today, because he would have been on loan at a Championship club to gain even more experience. And he would not have got his opportunity to play for Tottenham,” Sherwood was quoted by Telegraph.

“The players on offer were not going to make us any better. If you would have said we could have had Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo then I might have taken them on,” the 45-year-old said sarcastically.

“But I decided it was right to give youth the opportunity at Tottenham, Harry Kane being one of those players.”
