West Ham United could be faced with FA Cup expulsion if FIFA deem that the Hammers broke a rule by selecting striker Diafra Sakho in their 1-0 win at Bristol City, according to The Mirror.

The 25-year-old withdrew from Senegal’s Africa Cup of Nations squad because of a back injury.

However, he then scored against Bristol City just 18 days later.

Under FIFA rules, a player cannot play for his club if he is meant to be on international duty.

Article 6 of FIFA’s Disciplinary Measures reads: “The FIFA Players’ Status Committee shall…declare any match(es) in which the player took part to have been lost by the club concerned.

“Any points thus gained by the club in question shall be forfeited. Any match contested according to the cup system shall be regarded as having been won by the opposing team, irrespective of the score.”

FIFA are investigating the situation, but West Ham are “vigorously” denying doing anything wrong.

Senegal are said to be angry that Sakho played for for West Ham 48 hours before they were knocked out of Africa’s major international tournament by Algeria.

West Ham maintain that Sakho had a back injury which meant that he could not fly.

As a result, he was apparently driven to Ashton Gate in a limousine.
