The Chilean missed his side’s recent 5-0 demolition of Aston Villa with a hamstring niggle but Wenger seemed hopeful the star striker would be available for this weekend’s crunch match with hated rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

However, the Gunners boss has said ahead of the match that Sanchez will not be ready for the game at White Hart Lane and may not even be fit for Arsenal’s following game against Leicester City.

“The latest is that Alexis is not ready. He is not far away, the Leicester game is a possibility. He is of course very difficult to keep quiet! He is training but it’s light training,” Wenger told Arsenal’s official website.

Alexis has scored 12 goals and provided seven assists in the Premier League this season, being directly involved in 19 of the Gunners 44 goals, seven more than any other Arsenal player.

There was some more positive news for another forward, however, with former Manchester United forward Danny Welbeck returning to full training in the week and in contention for a recall to the starting XI.

Welbeck, another summer signing for the Gunners, hasn’t featured since their 2-1 win over West Ham on 28th December.

Alex Oxlade Chamberlain and Jack Wilshere remain out of action for the foreseeable future.
