Why This Weekend’s Premier League Fixtures Could Define The Entire Season – Including Arsenal & Liverpool Fates

8) Everton 2-3 Liverpool, 2001

This game had it all, two penalties, a red card, and a last minute winner. Gary McAllister’s 40-yard free kick in injury time will be savoured by Liverpool fans for years.

7) Everton 4-4 Liverpool, 1991

The Blues came from behind four times in this encounter, and Kenny Dalglish resigned just two days later. The Toffees also won the replay 1-0 to go through to the next round of the FA Cup a week later.

6) Liverpool 3-2 Everton, 1989

Just five weeks after the Hillsborough disaster this was a very emotional clash in the FA Cup final. Everton came from behind twice, but it wasn’t enough as Ian Rush confirmed his status as a Reds legend with two extra time goals.

5) Liverpool 3-2 Everton, 1999

The result in this match was secondary to Robbie Fowler’s celebration after scoring. He pretended to snort the touchline in reaction to allegations that he took cocaine. Manager Gerard Houllier tried to claim that he was just eating the grass, but everyone knows what the striker was really up to.

4) Everton 1-0 Liverpool aet, 2009

Just as Dan Gosling scored an extra time winner against the red half of Merseyside ITV decided it would be a good time for an advert. As bad as this was, it just added to the drama as the Toffees knocked Steven Gerrard and co out of the FA Cup.

3) Liverpool 3-0 Everton, 2012

Steven Gerrard decided to mark his  400th Liverpool appearance with a hat trick against their fiercest rivals. It is a match that will not be remembered well by the Toffees, with David Moyes’ terrible derby record being extended in his final year at the club.

2) Everton 3-0 Liverpool, 2006

A rare win for the Blues that will be remembered fondly for Pepe Reina’s gaffe when handling a Lee Carsley shot. The Spaniard spilled the strike, allowing Andy Johnson to head in his second goal of the match and end the game as a contest.

1) Everton 3-3 Liverpool, 2013

Possibly the greatest Merseyside derby ever, this game had it all. End to end from the start, both sides came from behind at times and it was possibly Romelu Lukaku’s best performance for the Toffees to date. The Belgian grabbed a brace, and possibly could have had a winner in the last minute had Gerard Deulofeu decided to pas rather than shoot.
