Pellegrini has already told Montenegrin striker Jovetic that he has until the end of the season to prove his worth at the Etihad, after cutting him from his Champions League squad for new signing Wilfried Bony.

Milner though, is still dragging his feet over negotiations for a new deal. With Liverpool and Arsenal both keeping an eye on the situation, City are fearful that they won’t be able to convince the England international to commit his future beyond the expiration of his contract this summer.

Jovetic is already said to be looking to make a getaway, though Pellegini believes the player will be in the right frame of mind for the title run in.

“It is very important now for Stevan to try and play as many games as he can between now and the end of the season, not be injured, and try to have a high performance every time he plays,” he said.

“Then at the end of the season, we will analyse not only Stevan but the whole squad who will continue next season.”

On Milner’s situation he added: “For the moment there is no progress.

“But I think he will he make the correct arrangement here. Knowing the way he thinks, we will see the same Milner with a contract or without a contract because he is a great professional.”

While Jovetic seems to be practically surplus to requirements, Milner’s undeniably been one of the Premier League champion’s most effective performers this term. The 29-year-old has weighed in with four goals and five assists in all competitions, and provided a consistently strong offensive and defensive presence in the midfield.
