Could the Argentinian possibly join the ranks of these other South Americans to have failed in the Premier League? Eerily quite a lot of them were at Old Trafford…

5) Juan Sebastian Veron, Manchester United/Chelsea

When the midfielder arrived fresh from inspiring Lazio to the Serie A title much was hoped for Veron at Old Trafford. Especially when they spent £28.1 million on him. However, he went on to have trouble with the pace of the league, and was sold to Chelsea just two years later after being labelled a failure by the press and fans alike. The Blues spent £15 million on the Argentine but then farmed him out on loan back to Italy after an injury hit first campaign.

4) Robinho, Manchester City

Signed as a statement by their new rich owners, the Citizens got a dud in the Brazilian. The forward started averagely with 14 goals in his first season, but then it went downhill. He was injured for the first few months of his second campaign and then struggled to find form, scoring just once in 12 appearances. The former Real Madrid man eventually went back to his home country with Santos.

3) Diego Forlan, Manchester United

Despite impressing both before and after in his spell in the North West the Uruguayan was unable to replicate that form in the Premier League. Signing in January 2002, the striker didn’t score in his first season and continued to struggle. He will always be remembered for a brace against rivals Liverpool, but 17 goals in 98 appearances displays just how poor he was.

2) Alfonso Alves, Middlesbrough

A record signing for the then mid-table club at £12.5 million. After managing 45 goals in 38 games for Heerenveen a lot was expected of the forward, but he managed very little. In two years with the team he only netted 13 times in 47 matches. Five of those goals were in two games against the Manchester clubs as well.

1) Kleberson, Manchester United

After impressing in the World Cup Sir Alex Ferguson signed the midfielder as a replacement for earlier failure Sebastian Veron. However, it turned out he had signed another flop and the Brazilian only lasted two seasons, making 30 appearances and scoring twice.
