The result at the KC Stadium saw Villa slip into the relegation zone and now a replacement will need to be found quickly to ensure the Birmingham side avoid the drop this season.

Speculation as to who will be Lambert’s replacement is already underway and here are five potential candidates courtesy of CaughtOffside.

Sean Dyche

Looks likely to go down himself currently as his Burnley team looked doomed to relegation, but Dyche has won many fans during his time in the English top tier with the spirited performances of his team despite the fact they spent very little on new talent over the summer.

Eddie Howe

Young and talented we could be seeing Howe in the top division next term as his Bournemouth team could well earn promotion from the Championship against the odds and employing the Englishman would certainly be a nod to the future from the Villans.

Jurgen Klinsmann

A more established figure in world football now, although for all the success Klinsmann enjoyed on the pitch as a player the majority of his fame in the dugout has come on the international stage as he has managed his native Germany and is currently in charge of USA.

David Moyes

After a turbulent 11-month stint as Ferguson’s successor at Old Trafford, Moyes returned to management this term by taking up the somewhat surprising position as Real Sociedad boss, but there is always going to be the belief the Scot will be tempted back to England with the right job.

Tim Sherwood

Having enjoyed a relatively successful spell as Tottenham Hotspur manager last campaign every time a new position comes up Sherwood is linked with it, but whether the Villa faithful would be so happy with his appointment when experienced names such as Klinsmann and Moyes are being linked is unknown.
