The 21-year-old has scored 23 goals in all competitions so far this term, with reports claiming that the player has already taken on a ‘senior role within the dressing room’, while he has also been dubbed ‘one of the more mature and influential characters’ at the club.

As Kane’s reputation continues to grow and his England call-up edges closer, it got us thinking about the favourites to be the next captain of the Three Lions, once Wayne Rooney eventually decides it’s time to hang up his boots.

Rooney, 29, has already surpassed 100 caps for his country, and logic would suggest that he’ll call it a day after the next World Cup in just over three years time – if indeed he is able to keep going for that long.

Here are our top contenders to be the next England skipper:

8) John Stones (Everton)

The young defender has spoken openly about his desire to be England captain, but he’s unlikely to have gained enough experience by the time the next captaincy selection comes around.

7) Calum Chambers (Arsenal)

Another young defender, the Arsenal man has made giant strides of progress so far this season after moving from Southampton. If he continues to develop at such a rate, he could be an outside bet.

6) Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur)

Tottenham have been signing the praises of the young striker, but he’s not even been capped by England thus far. If he is successful when he comes into the team and continues his form, he could be the surprise choice.

5) Ross Barkley (Everton)

The midfielder has struggled with injuries so far this season, but he made a big impact when he came into the England side last year and will hope that he can continue to impress.

4) Jack Wilshere (Arsenal)

The midfielder has plenty of quality and is already fairly experienced at international level, but he needs to put his injury problems behind him and stop appearing in the press for breaking rules, if he’s ever to be trusted with the armband.

3) Joe Hart (Manchester City)

The goalkeeper is one of the most experienced players within the England dressing room, having earned 48 caps for his country. He’s commanding presence at the back and would no doubt love the chance to stand in as captain.

2) Jordan Henderson (Liverpool)

Henderson is already the favourite to be the next Liverpool captain when Steven Gerrard leaves the club at the end of the season. He’s proved himself to be a commanding presence in the midfield, and could do the same job for his country.

1) Gary Cahill (Chelsea)

The current England vice-captain, Cahill is the same age as Rooney but as a defender might have a couple of extra years in his international career. He’s be a decent stop-gap solution if no other obvious candidate has emerged.
