Success Or Failure: Rating The Players Sold By Chelsea For More Than £10m In The Last Ten Years

Romelu Lukaku has struggled to justify his huge price tag so far this season…

Everton were so impressed with Romelu Lukaku last season, that they were convinced to pay Chelsea £28m for him during the summer. The Belgian scored 16 goals in all competitions last season, and is on track to match that tally this term – having already struck ten times.

However, the 21-year-old has suffered from failing to live up to expectations and match his lofty price tag. Everton fans will have been desperate to see the player push on and have a ‘world class’ season, but it’s just not happened, as the Daily Mirror explains.

You have to admire Chelsea, who have made a huge profit on a player who never even managed to score a goal for them. Over the last ten years, the Blues have sold ten players for £10m or more, and below we rate their success or failure since leaving Stamford Bridge:

Romelu Lukaku (Sold to Everton for £28m, 2014)

FAILURE – His goal-to-game ratio has fallen and his influence in a struggling side has failed to improve throughout a difficult campaign.

FAILURE – PSG have failed to maintain their domestic dominance of recent seasons, while their star summer signing has been indifferent.

Andre Schurrle (Sold to Wolfsburg for £22m, 2015)

SUCCESS – The World Cup winner looked good on his debut for Germany’s in form club side, who looks well suited to Dieter Hecking’s side.

Juan Mata (Sold to Manchester United for £37.1m, 2014)

FAILURE – Mata’s arrival at Old Trafford failed to save David Moyes, while the Spaniard has struggled to hold down a first-team place this year.

Arjen Robben (Sold to Real Madrid for £24m, 2007)

SUCCESS – The Dutchman won the La Liga title with Madrid, but didn’t reach his full potential before moving on to Bayern Munich in 2009.

Wayne Bridge (Sold to Manchester City for £12m, 2009)

FAILURE – Bridge quickly fell out of favour after joining City, making just 42 Premier League appearances in four years before ending his career with Reading.

Yuri Zhirkov (Sold to Anzhi Makhachkala for £13.2m, 2011)

FAILURE – The Russian international failed to make the grade at Chelsea and has since struggled to revive his career in his home country.

SUCCESS – After being allowed to leave Stamford Bridge, Sturridge has become a firm favourite at Anfield, scoring 37 goals in 56 games.

Kevin De Bruyne (Sold to Wolfsburg for £18m, 2014)

SUCCESS – The Belgian has rapidly developed into one of the finest young midfielders in the world, after making just three league appearances for the Blues.

Ryan Bertrand (Sold to Southampton for £10m, 2015)

SUCCESS – After bursting onto the scene at Chelsea and starting the Champions League final win, Bertrand slowly dropped down the pecking order and found himself at Southampton, who he has helped reach the top four of the Premier League this year.
