With any transfer for the striker likely to cost upwards of £60 million, it looks clear that Louis van Gaal wants to spend big again this summer in a bid to rebuild Manchester United to their stature of old.

We take a look at five other strikers who would be in the Red Devil’s price range.

Alexandre Lacazette

The French striker has been on fire for Lyon this season, scoring 25 goals in 22 appearances. Tipped to join Liverpool this summer by Metro, if Manchester United have as much money as is reported to spend this summer, there is no reason they won’t join the race for his signature.
Jackson Martinez

Could be more of a Falcao replacement than anyone, and would be far more affordable. Martinez has followed in his countryman’s footsteps by tearing it up at Portuguese giants Porto, with 21 goals already this season. The striker has been linked with Arsenal by the Daily Mail, but things can change incredibly quickly in the world of football.
Saido Berahino

At the tender age of 21, Saido Berahino has put in a number of impressive performances at Premier League side West Bromwich Albion after breaking into the first team. Touted for the England side and perennially linked to top sides, this summer may finally be his chance to leave for a bigger club.
Karim Benzema

Benzema is without doubt world class, and has consistently gotten into the Real Madrid side despite competition from some of the best strikers in Europe. He has scored 17 goals this season and may tempt van Gaal into dipping into his back pocket.
Cristiano Ronaldo

This one is probably more speculative than anything, though there could be something in it. Ronaldo has been under a lot of pressure recently at the Bernabeu, facing criticism for celebrating his birthday on the evening of the 4-0 humbling against bitter rivals Atletico Madrid. He has been linked with a return in the Metro, and if they are willing to splash the cash on Cavani, who is to say they wouldn’t stretch it a bit further for the one everyone wants?
