1) He can’t play wing-back

Van Gaal’s system requires attacking width from wing-backs. Cristiano Ronaldo does not, and never has played as a wing-back or full-back on either side, and if there’s one thing we’ve learned from LVG it’s that a good manager must NEVER alter his tactics to suit top class players.

2) He shoots too much

He shoots a lot, he scores a lot. Translation: he loses the ball a lot, and football is all about possession. United play a possesion game under van Gaal and Ronaldo’s constant habit of putting the ball in the back of the net would be a huge disruption.

3) He’d block Strootman signing

Ronaldo would cost at least £80m, if not more. With van Gaal seemingly determined to sign AS Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman above anyone else, even if he does cost around £75m as has been suggsted, there simply isn’t the money for Ronaldo. Yes United already have Ander Herrera and Daley Blind who basically do the same job, but van Gaal NEEDS Strootman.

4) He doesn’t get on with Bale

Another player United are almost certainly signing is Gareth Bale, and it is all too clear that he doesn’t get on with Ronaldo. And if there’s one thing van Gaal values it’s keeping his squad happy and keeping good relationships with all his players.

5) He’s a reminder of the Ferguson era

Gary Neville wrote this week that fans should forget the Sir Alex Ferguson era under van Gaal. Van Gaal likes this and agrees with this, and sees no reason to go digging back to the past by bringing Ronaldo to Old Trafford, reminding the club of a time when they had to deal with an inferior manager who knew nothing about tactics and philosophies.
