1) Romelu Lukaku (Everton)

Everton defender Phil Jagielka has claimed Romelu Lukaku’s £28m price tag since he joined the club permanently from Chelsea is affecting his form this season. The Belgian international certainly looked a lot better when he was on loan at Goodison Park last term, and is one of a number of players struggling to shake off his hefty transfer fee.

2) Mesut Ozil (Arsenal)

Arsenal’s record signing Mesut Ozil has picked up his form this season, but the German playmaker is still haunted by his £42.5m price tag whenever he suffers any slight dip in form. In truth, the former Real Madrid man could have done better for the Gunners, but has not been as bad as some would have you believe.

3) Luke Shaw (Manchester United)

Clearly a bright young talent, Luke Shaw is taking some time to settle in at new club Manchester United after leaving Southampton in the summer. Still a teenager, Shaw will need time to adapt and grow into his new role at a club with high expectations, but with his £30m fee some have expected him to perform immediately.

4) Roberto Soldado (Tottenham Hotspur)

A pretty poor signing in truth, Roberto Soldado has not done the business for Tottenham and is perhaps too mentally fragile to deal with being a £26m buy for the Premier League side. After all, the Spaniard never struggled for goals back in La Liga.

5) Erik Lamela (Tottenham Hotspur)

Another expensive Tottenham buy, £30m man Erik Lamela is yet to get going in English football and has a hard fight to turn things around now after such inconsistent form following his big-money move from AS Roma.

6) Luis Suarez (Barcelona)

Superb for Liverpool last season, Luis Suarez has already been dubbed a flop by some at Barcelona after a slow start at the Nou Camp. Costing £75m, it is no surprise that the Uruguayan is under pressure to perform straight away, despite not being able to train with his new team in pre-season and being short of fitness due to his FIFA ban.

7) Edinson Cavani (Paris Saint-Germain)

A £55m signing, Edinson Cavani has done alright for Paris Saint-Germain since joining from Napoli, though he has also suffered from being in the shadow of Zlatan Ibrahimovic as well as for being the club’s most expensive ever signing.

8) Stevan Jovetic (Manchester City)

Signed for around £20m from Fiorentina, Stevan Jovetic has had some rotten luck with injuries during his time with Manchester City, and his future looks in serious doubt after being axed from their Champions League squad. Not the most expensive player City have bought, but still one who will have been expected to contribute more.

9) Eliaquim Mangala (Manchester City)

A superbly promising young defender who impressed at previous club Porto, Eliaquim Mangala has been the victim of his price tag after struggling to adapt to a new team in a new, far more competitive league.

10) Juan Mata (Manchester United)

In and out of the United team this season, Juan Mata does not quite look worth £37m after struggling to replicate his best Chelsea form at Old Trafford, though he has certainly been far from a bad purchase.

11) Dejan Lovren (Liverpool)

A player who probably cost too much after just one fine season with Southampton, Dejan Lovren has been poor for Liverpool and looks nowhere near worth £20m, though of course his critics have been harsher due to his inflated transfer fee.
