However, here are six incidents from this season alone that show referees have, if anything, been too lenient on the Blues. They also make it clear that Gary Cahill really needs to have a long hard think about his role on a football field…

6) Gary Cahill v Liverpool

The England vice-captain got away with this handball against the Reds earlier in the season, allowing the Blues to win the match 2-1.

5) Branislav Ivanovic v Everton

The Blues were drawing 0-0 with the Toffees when the Serbian appeared to headbutt James McCarthy. Had the defender been rightly sent off for the incident the Stamford Bridge outfit may not have scored their last minute winner. Even after the FA reviewed the incident, he stayed unpunished.

4) Gary Cahill v Tottenham

It is mind boggling how the 29-year-old didn’t get a card for kicking and stamping Harry Kane, with there seemingly being no intention of him get the ball… Lucky boy.

3) Gary Cahill v Hull City

Yet another incident of Cahill getting away with dirty play, this time with a blatant foul. It might be interesting to see if the England international knows any referees. What’s more, Jose Mourinho claimed that his defender didn’t dive, but he clearly did – right?

2) Diego Costa v Manchester City

The controversial forward has had his fair share of incidents, but usually he has been punished for his actions. However, he received nothing for putting his hands around Pablo Zabaleta’s neck – when it was arguably a red card offence. He also wasn’t sent off for stamping on both Liverpool’s Emre Can and Martin Skrtel – and although he was given a subsequent ban – he remained on the pitch at the time, helping his team progress to the League Cup final…

1) Gary Cahill v Arsenal

A fourth appearance on our list for the centre-back, and although he got a yellow card for this it arguably should have been a red. The challenge on Alexis Sanchez made Arsene Wenger angry enough to confront Jose Mourinho in the Blues technical area.
