The defeat means the Gunners face a very tough road to the quarter-finals of the competitions in the away leg of the tie in two weeks time.

They have not managed to get past the last 16 since 2010, with ties against Barcelona and Bayern Munich making it tough for them to go through.

When the North London club drew the Ligue 1 side it was thought that they may finally break that run but this was not to be the case.

Wenger said: “It was a horrible night as you said but congratulations to Monaco. It was an awful night. We got both aspects wrong – the chances we didn’t create and the defending was suicidal. We were not sharp enough to get into this game and we paid for it. Monaco are strong physically but we still missed the chances.”

He continued: “Our weakness was mentality – we rushed our game and we paid for it. We cannot afford that.”

If the Frenchman’s team are to go through then they will have to score at least three goals at the Stade Louis II stadium. It will be a hard task given AS Monaco have only conceded twice in Europe so far.
