1) Arsene Wenger (Arsenal)

After so many attempts, one has to wonder if it’s ever going to happen in this competition for Arsene Wenger. The Arsenal manager just seems to lack that bit of tactical nous and flexibility at the very top level, despite plenty of domestic success with the Gunners earlier in his career. The 3-1 defeat to AS Monaco this week surely ends their hopes in the Champions League for another season. And, let’s face it, he can’t have too many years left in the job!

2) Manuel Pellegrini (Manchester City)

Another big name manager who just doesn’t seem quite cut out to be there among the big boys, Manuel Pellegrini’s Manchester City side looked short once again this week as they lost 2-1 at home to a Barcelona side that have hardly set the world alight this season. The Chilean seems to have found it hard to get his world class squad of players performing at their best this season and may never have a better chance of winning a European Cup.

3) Luis Enrique (Barcelona)

Despite a fine result for Barcelona this week, Luis Enrique’s time with the club has come under plenty of scrutiny as he arguably doesn’t look like the kind of big name required to take charge of a club of this size. Barca dominated Europe under Pep Guardiola, but Enrique probably isn’t the man to restore that kind of glory again anytime soon.

4) Massimiliano Allegri (Juventus)

Once a powerhouse of European football, Juventus are just a little bit short in this competition at the moment, and have made little impact in recent years despite building a strong squad that has dominated Serie A with three title wins in a row. In Massimiliano Allegri, they have a decent manager who remains something of an unknown quantity at this level, having had a mixed time at previous club AC Milan, but it’s questionable if he looks like having what it takes to replicate the likes of Carlo Ancelotti, Fabio Capello and Marcelo Lippi as one of the great Italian coaches.

5) Laurent Blanc (Paris Saint-Germain)

Somewhat fortunate to be in charge of the hugely ambitious Paris Saint-Germain, Laurent Blanc has not really been up to scratch with the French giants so far, failing to show the kind of ambition and courage needed to take on the big boys in the Champions League. The Frenchman is a decent tactician for Ligue 1, having won titles with both PSG and Bordeaux, but he surely isn’t the man to conquer Europe with PSG as they continue to assemble a world class group of players.

6) Roberto Mancini (Inter Milan)

Another manager who did poorly in the Champions League with Manchester City, Roberto Mancini is now with Inter Milan who are not even in the competition these days. Despite some great domestic success throughout his career, the Italian is another who seems to be just short of a world class manager who could guide a team to glory in the European Cup.
