Wayne Rooney – Manchester United

Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal claimed that the club were suffering without a 20-goal-a-season striker, yet Rooney headed in the right direction in silencing the controversial Dutchman with his two goals to seal three points against Sunderland.

For van Gaal to have made such a remark is disrespectful to the Manchester United captain; Rooney sits third behind Denis Law and Sir Bobby Charlton in the all-time scorers for the club, and there is no denying that the former Netherlands boss is playing a crucial role in the poor form of his star players.

The double against the Black Cats saw the England skipper break a Premier League record – the first player to score at least 10 goals in 11 consecutive seasons.

Saido Berahino – West Bromwich Albion

The Albion striker has had a troubled campaign so far in the Premier League – with his season a juxtaposition of excitement and controversy.

The 21-year-old, a target for Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool, netted his 17th goal in the shock victory over top-four chasing Southampton, and his goal sees the club move ever further from the threat of relegation.

After earlier this month admitting that he wants to ‘move on to bigger things‘, the forward will need to keep performing each week to silence the Baggies faithful.

Jason Puncheon – Crystal Palace

The Eagles winger put in an outstanding man-of-the-match second half performance in the victory over West Ham United, pulling the strings and grabbing the assists for all three of his side’s goals.

The 28-year-old continues to shine in a Crystal Palace shirt, and more performances like this could see the attacker in with a chance of an England call-up.

Jonas Gutierrez – Newcastle United

The Magpies midfielder may not have made it off the bench for first-team action in the victory over Aston Villa on Saturday, but a special mention must go to the Argentine for returning to St James’ Park after beating cancer.

As a result of injury to Massadio Haidara, manager John Carver was unable to bring the 31-year-old on for his first appearance in two years.

While Gutierrez missed out on Saturday, football fans were delighted to see him back on the Toon bench, and he is sure to get a huge response from the crowd when his time on the pitch, once again, arrives.

Adnan Januzaj – Manchester United

The Belgian starlet has suffered tremendously since the arrival of Louis van Gaal, with the Dutchman not convinced the winger is worthy of a place in the Red Devils first-team.

However, an assist for skipper Wayne Rooney in the victory over Sunderland, led to praise from the Man United boss, and could spark off an exciting end to the season for the 20-year-old.
