6) Jordan Henderson, Liverpool

With Steven Gerrard leaving Anfield in the summer, someone is going to have to step up in order to fill the void. In recent times Henderson has been looking more and more likely to do this, which is surprising considering he wasn’t even a guaranteed starter back in August. As current vice captain it is also likely that the England international will be the skipper next time round.

5) Ashley Young, Manchester United

If you’d told people that Young would be United’s best wing-back this season, then they probably thought you were telling a bad joke. However, the 29-year-old has adapted perfectly to role, and Louis van Gaal could well offer him a new deal to stay at Old Trafford longer.

4) Harry Kane, Tottenham

The striker has enjoyed a breakthrough season at White Hart Lane, and could even be in with a chance of an national team call up at the end of March. With 24 goals this season, the 21-year-old is the highest scoring Englishman this campaign.

3) Jose Fonte, Southampton

Regarded by some Saints fans as a liability last time round, the Portuguese has flourished since the departure of Dejan Lovren to Liverpool. The 31-year-old has helped his team to the best defensive record in the top flight, conceding only 20 goals so far.

2) Stewart Downing, West Ham

Formerly seen as an old fashioned winger who got to the byline and put a ball in, but since moving in to a central role the 30-year-old has transformed himself. He even earned a brief recall to the England team.

1) Francis Coquelin, Arsenal

The midfielder was on loan at Championship Charlton just four months ago, but is now a guaranteed starter for the North London club! He has filled in a role that the Gunners have needed for years, playing just in front of the back four.
