Both English clubs were thought to have missed out on the 24-year-old, with a new contract all but signed with Jurgen Klopp’s side, but a possible change of heart has bought both Champions League chasing clubs back into contention.

Gundogan’s current deal will have just a year to run at the end of the season, so Europe’s elite clubs will have their eye out for a bargain. Dortmund are understandably far from keen to see the Germany international go for nothing next summer, which may open their minds to negotiating a transfer this year if the 24 year-old elects to move on.

Still, it will be something of a surprise if Gundogan does decide to leave at this stage of the season, as Dortmund have experienced something of a resurgence in recent weeks – winning their last four league games, and moving away from the Bundesliga relegation zone. The contract extension of playmaker Marco Reus was a huge contributing factor to the upturn in form, and was expected to inspire other first-team regulars to commit their futures with the club. This may not prove to be the case with Gundogan.

Dortmund will reportedly be looking for around £16m for the midfielder.
