Five Arsenal Players Who Should Follow Abou Diaby to a Gunners Exit This Summer

Abou Diaby is Arsenal’s longest serving player in the current squad alongside Theo Walcott.

The sad case of Abou Diaby looks set to come to an end this summer as the midfielder nears the end of his contract at Arsenal. Arsene Wenger has been patient with the Frenchman but an extension for Diaby doesn’t look on the cards and the Metro believe his days are numbered.

Here are five other players who should follow Diaby out of Arsenal.

1. Mathieu Flamini

Wenger re-signed the midfielder on a free transfer in 2013, five years after Flamini walked out of the club at a time when he was needed most.

The Gunners fans have never quite reconnected with the Frenchman and he’s been ousted by Francis Coquelin in the engine-room.

His game hasn’t improved and a lack of technique has meant a lack of suitability to the current style of play.

2. Yaya Sanogo

Premier League onlookers are yet to see what made Wenger bring a relatively unknown Sanogo form the second division in France for a free transfer.

The forward is currently on loan at Crystal Palace and is struggling to get a game.

With Chuba Akpom, who is clearly more talented than Sanogo, on the rise the Gunners are well stocked in young forwards.

3. Mikel Arteta

The fact that Arteta has been named club captain three years after arriving speaks volumes.

However, injuries and age have caught up with the Spaniard with Arteta hardly available this season.

His contract runs out in the summer and a new deal looks far from imminent.

4. Joel Campbell

Loaned to Villarreal in a deal which brought Gabriel to Arsenal, Campbell is currently struggling in Spain.

A decent World Cup campaign excited Arsenal fans but the Costa Rica international has failed to live up to the billing. A new contract extension before departing on loan was probably geared towards recouping a decent fee when he’s sold rather than an indication of a long-term future.

5. Per Mertesacker

Wenger dropped the star in the match against Everton and performances have matched his languid style.

Having admitted that motivation was an issue following World Cup success, the scope has been on Mertesacker and he’s failed to deliver.

A central defensive signing this summer could spell the end of Mertesacker’s time at Arsenal.
