There’s no argument that Anfield legend Gerrard will take some replacing, though it seems management and scouts at the Reds believe Sporting Lisbon’s Carvalho could well be the man for the job.

According to the Portuguese paper, the Merseyside club sent scouts to Portugal to watch Sporting’s 3-0 loss against Porto, with the sole purpose of watching the young holding midfielder.

Carvalho has been a regular fixture in Sporting’s side, playing in 30 games, with the Lisbon side sitting third in the Portuguese top division, looking good for Champions League qualification.

Sporting recently purchased the player’s full registration, as he was originally only part-owned by the club, which would make any future move to the Premier League much more straightforward.

During their time under David Moyes, Manchester United, along with Arsenal, had been heavily linked with the player and if Liverpool see a move as viable, there is every opportunity it could reignite interest from their Premier League rivals.
