Italy Boss: ‘Man United Approached Me Before Louis van Gaal’!

Conte won multiple titles during his time in Turin.

Italian national team manager Antonio Conte has hinted that Man United approached him regarding the vacant manager’s position at Old Trafford last summer before hiring Louis van Gaal.

Conte suddenly resigned from his post at giants Juventus and was later appointed as the head coach of his country, but revealed – rather cryptically- that he had dialogue with Man United.

Casting back to the summer, it seemed inevitable that the Red Devils would hand Van Gaal the position but there were long periods of very little noises coming from either camp.

“The English team that looked for me ended up signing the coach of a national team,” Conte said whilst speaking to TV show Grand Hotel Chiambretti (via Evening Standard).

“But my challenge with the national team is personal. Becoming a coach where usually the job is to select players, it is inspiring.”

It seems as though for Man United, Van Gaal was the only relatively available manager with other well renowned coaches around the world ruling themselves out of the position.

The Dutchman Van Gaal however maybe the ideal candidate to smooth the transition to assistant Ryan Giggs – should the club wish to go in the direction.
