Danny Welbeck & Five Other Players Who Came Back To Haunt Their Former Employers Including Chelsea Legend, Arsenal Traitors & Man United Favourite

Welbeck’s not the first and certainly won’t be the last to haunt his former club.

Danny Welbeck’s return to Old Trafford must have felt like a particularly galling nightmare to Louis van Gaal, after he had sanctioned the sale of the striker in the summer, and replaced him with the continually disappointing Radamel Falcao.

But Welbeck wasn’t the first and certainly won’t be the last player to come back and haunt his former side, here’s five of the best below with video replays:

5) Adam Johnson (Sunderland) v Manchester City – 2012

His first appearance against City saw Johnson delivery a late Christmas present to former boss Roberto Mancini, hitting the winner against his former side and causing a damaging blow to their Premier League title charge.

4) Emmanuel Adebayor (Manchester City) v Arsenal – 2009

An acrimonious summer move to the Etihad saw Adebayor get his payback on Arsenal fans when the north Londoners visited Manchester scoring the third goal in a 4-2 win.

The goal was compounded by what followed with the Togolese sprinting the length of the pitch to slide on his needs infront of the visiting Gunners support.

3) Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid) v Manchester United – 2013

Ronaldo came up against his former side for the first time following his £80 million deal to take him to Spain in 2009.

A bullet header just when Real needed it as United had taken the lead through their then striker Danny Welbeck.

Ronaldo would go on again to score the decisive goal of the tie in the return leg at Old Trafford.

2) Frank Lampard (Manchester City) v Chelsea – 2014

Lampard showed Jose Mourinho exactly why he should have offered him a new contract when he appeared in the Chelsea box to score a crucial goal for Manchester City.

The Blues had earlier taken the lead through Diego Costa and a victory would have seen Mourinho’s side take an almost assailable lead so early in the season.

1) Robin van Persie (Manchester United) v Arsenal – 2012

In his first match against Arsenal since a torrid summer move from the Emirates to Old Trafford, Robin van Persie needed just two-and-a-half minutes to score against a side he’d been with for seven seasons after capitalising on a Thomas Vermaelen error.

Van Persie has proved to be a particularly troublesome thorn in Arsenal’s side since his exit scoring in three of the four fixtures he’s faced them in.
