Rating & ranking Manchester United’s SIX summer signings – Di Maria gets C-

Louis van Gaal came to Manchester United under much fanfare that, after a dismal season for the Red Devils under David Moyes, he would finally be the one to restore the feel-good factor back to Old Trafford.

It hasn’t quite gone to plan so far though, with the side having no realistic chance of winning a trophy for a second season and expensive summer signings having flopped spectacularly.

Here are how van Gaal’s summer acquisitions have taken to life in the Premier League.

Angel di Maria

Cost: £59.7 million

Appearances: 25

Goals: 4

Assists: 10

C-

The Argentine who tore it up at Real Madrid last season, a campaign in which the club won their tenth Champions League title, hit the ground running for Manchester United, scoring three and assisting six more in his first 10 games for the Red Devils. Following an injury though, then followed a change of position which seems to have dented his confidence, giving lackadaisical performances.

Marcos Rojo

Cost: £16 million

Appearances: 21

Goals: 1

Assists: 0

B

The centre half has hardly set the world alight, not really justifying his hefty transfer fee, but has done well to cope with the constant changing of his defensive partner. Rojo has played with Jonny Evans, Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett, having to play the role of established older pro and understudy. He has been reliable without being spectacular.
Daley Blind

Cost: £13.8 million

Appearances: 20

Goals: 2

Assists: 2

B

Blind was a stand-out player for the Netherlands in an impressive 2014 World Cup campaign and came to Old Trafford with the manager obviously knowing a lot about him. The Dutchman is incredibly versatile, doing a job whenever called upon, but hasn’t set the world on fire in any position.
Ander Herrera

Cost: £29 million

Appearances: 21

Goals: 5

Assists: 4

C

The biggest barrier in the Spaniard’s development at Old Trafford seems to be his manager, who spent £29 million on him. Herrera has played just 978 minutes this season, but when he has, his talent has been obvious. Both he and fans will be hoping for more of a chance next season after this disappointment.Luke Shaw

Cost: £30 million

Appearances: 17

Goals: 0

Assists: 0

C-

Luke Shaw definitely has time to grow into his role at Old Trafford, but has had a season to forget. The 19-year-old had the world at his feet at Southampton, but since joining Manchester United has been told he was overweight by van Gaal and suffered countless small injuries.

Radamel Falcao

Cost: £6 million loan fee

Appearances: 20

Goals: 4

Assists: 5

D

Possibly one of the biggest disappointments of the season has been the demise of Radamel Falcao. The Colombian thrives from quick service from the flanks and has found that desperately wanting from Manchester United. His own work has been poor, looking laboured in his movement and tame in the penalty area.
