The ex-Germany international thinks that the Citizens will hand the Chilean short shrift as a result of the turbulent season they have had.

The Sky Blues lost to Burnley on Saturday, leaving them six points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea with their title rivals also having a game in hand.

They have also been knocked out of the FA Cup and failed to get to even the semi-finals of the Capital One Cup. After Wednesday the Mancunian side could be out of the Champions League, as they are 1-2 down to Barcelona going in to the second leg at the Nou Camp. Should this happen it would leave the club unlikely to win any trophies this season.

Asked if this might lead to Pellegrini being sacked, Hamann said: “I do, I really do. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was someone else in charge at City at the start of next season. The club said at the start of last season they wanted to win five trophies under him. They won the title and the League Cup last season in Pellegrini’s first season in charge.

“He’s in his second year now and they could be out of all competitions by Wednesday if they get knocked out of the Champions League. If City were competitive in the Premier League in terms of challenging for the title, then I’d say maybe he’d get another year. But I don’t think he will.”
