Bordeaux are prone struggle without towering centre-back Lamine Sane; they did so earlier in the season when the defender was out injured for the away fixture against Paris Saint-Germain, losing 3-0.

Similarly, when he was on international duty with Senegal earlier in the year, ahead of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, Willy Sagnol’s side failed to win in three, suffering consecutive defeats against Nice and (again) PSG.

However, with the Senegal stopper back in the side, Bordeaux turned the tables this weekend and secured a 3-2 victory with Sane scoring the opener.

The defender has been in fine fettle since returning from the Afcon and indeed, is yet to taste defeat with the Bordelais in 2015. His composed displays at the back and aerial threat going forward have helped Sagnol’s side go eight games unbeaten (of which Sane featured in six).

If he can stay fit and keep up this level of performance, then Bordeaux’s dreams of a European place may become reality.
