But who from each side would make into a combined starting 11?

Take a look at who we have chosen in our Liverpool/United XI

GK: David de Gea

The Manchester Unites stopper has been in excellent for between the sticks this season, and he is getting better, a wonderful save against from Alexis Sanchez in the FA Cup tie last week is an example of his game by game improvement.

For his performances this season, we have chosen him ahead of Liverpool’s Simon Mignolet.

We have decided to go with a 3-4-1-2 formation, given that both sides have played with three at the back this season.

CB: Martin Skrtel

The Slovakian international has mirrored Liverpool’s defensive displays this season, started off poorly but has vastly improved as the season progresses. Seems to have been galvanised since playing as one of a three in defence and has been a mainstay in the Reds’ side that has kept six successive clean sheets away from home in the league.

CB: Marcus Rojo

It’s no secret that centre half is a position where the Red Devils have struggled this season. We think the summer signing from Sporting Lisbon has performed well enough to get in our team ahead of Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Dejan Lovren and Emre Can.

CB: Mamadou Sakho

Since regaining his place in the starting line-up following Liverpool’s 3-0 defeat against United in December, the Reds are unbeaten in 13 games domestically and have looked a lot more stable at the back.

Remains unconvincing with the ball at his feet but there can be little doubts over his defensive qualities.

RWB/RW: Raheem Sterling

Perhaps Sterling will not enjoy the defensive duties that this role demands, but he has played there on numerous occasions this season.

One of Liverpool’s star men this season and has played a big role in their recent form which has taken them to within two points of the top-four

CM: Jordan Henderson

The first of the midfield spots goes to Liverpool’s in-form vice captain, with goals in each of his last three Premier League games, Henderson is relishing the extra responsibility of being captain in Steven Gerrard’s absence and it’s showing in his performances.

CM: Michael Carrick

Partnering Henderson in central midfield is Carrick. When he’s been out injured this season, United have missed his experience and quality on the ball. A key player in United’s bid for a top four finish.

LWB/LW – Ashley Young

Perhaps a surprise inclusion, but the Manchester United winger’s performances this season means he’s in our team on merit ahead of the likes of Luke Shaw and Alberto Moreno.

It appeared that Young was to depart Old Trafford when Loui van Gaal arrived in the summer, but the winger has knuckled down and has produced some very consistent displays.

AMC: Phillipe Coutinho

If Sterling is Liverpool’s player of the season so far, then this man can’t be too far away. After a slow start to the season, a switch of formation has brought out the very best in the Brazilian magician in recent months.

Just take a look at his two spectacular strikes against Southampton and Manchester City to see why he makes our team.

AMC: Angel di Maria

Possibly the most controversial selection, the super-talented Argentine has admittedly gone of the boil in recent months after an electric start to life in England. But the £59.7m man needs to be given more time to settle and we think this free role just behind the striker would bring out the very best in the former Real Madrid star.

CF: Wayne Rooney

After a brief stint as a centre-midfielder, the United and England captain is back in his favoured position as a striker and has scored four in four. One of few United players to have had a consistent season and for that reason he starts up-front in our team.
