After being handed the club’s famous number seven shirt – previously worn by Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham, George Best and Eric Cantona – at the start of the season, Di Maria has scored just three Premier League goals, but remains desperate to impress.

The club record signing, who joined from Real Madrid last summer, was quoted by The Sun. He said: “I was really excited to wear that number. I hope I can perform well so it can keep its place high in the history of United.”

United travel to Anfield on Sunday, looking to hold-down their place in the top four. The Argentine insists that the big-game atmosphere will not phase him, and that he’ll instead thrive on the big occasion.

He added: “Big games are when you have the chance to play against great players. When you play against a top side it’s even more enjoyable and it’s even more of a source of motivation.”
